Virginia Allene Houston

Virginia Allene Houston, age 98, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2024 while residing at Lakeview Christian Home in Carlsbad, NM.  Allene was born on October 24, 1925 in Afton, Texas to Allen and Flora (Bradford) Rich.  She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Dorothy, Valarie, Pat, RC, and Monroe and was the last survivor of her generation.

Allene graduated from Patton Springs High School in 1943.   She then moved to Lubbock, TX for work while waiting for her fiancé, Don Aud Houston, to return from WWII.  Upon his return, they married on October 19, 1945 in Afton, Texas.  Shortly after their marriage, they relocated to Carlsbad, NM where Don went to work at Potash Company of America (PCA) and Allene went to work as a Switch Board Operator for General Telephone Company (GTE) kickstarting her career and she quickly rose to the position of Business Office Manager from which she retired.  Allene was a Charter Member of the National WWII Museum and Bethel Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 51 years, Don; granddaughters: Melissa Houston Laina, Julie Houston Medley and great-granddaughter, Eustacia Visona. 

She is survived by her sons: Richard Houston and wife, Susan, Steve Houston; grandchildren: Rick Houston and wife Angela, Kevin Houston and wife, Jessica, and Lonnie Houston; great-grandchildren: Christopher McDonald, Christine Laina, Allen Houston, Brianna Cox, Douglas Lunsford, Kyle Houston, Joaquin Houston, Graysun Houston, Kaleb Houston, Kyraluna Houston, Evelane Forbes, William Forbes; great-great-grandchildren: Allen ‘AJ’, Leatha, Audd, and Laila.

Allene will be most fondly remembered by her beautiful smile, Holiday Jello Salads, and delicious Chess and Lemonade Pies.  She was extremely generous and would help anyone who needed her help. 

Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM, Thursday, March 28, 2024 at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, Carlsbad, NM with Pastor Dennis McKinley officiating. Allene will be laid to rest next to her husband and her sister.
