Vernell Barrick, 94, of W. Cherry Lane, Carlsbad, NM, passed away January 8, 2023 at Goodlife Assisted Living. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gene Harbaugh officiating.  Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, NM.  Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Vernell was born February 14, 1928 in Woodson, Texas to Edward and Annie (Higgins) Shipley.  She moved to Carlsbad in 1946 after graduating from Long Beach Secretarial College.  Vernell married Benny Barrick September 12, 1946.  She worked several secretarial jobs until going to work for the First Presbyterian Church in 1967 and retired in 1997 after 30 years.  Vernell was a life member of B.P.O. Does, #43, life member of Administrative Personnel Association of the Presbyterian Church, former member of American Business Women Association, former member of Carlsbad Medical Center Auxiliary and active in the Eddy County Shrine Ladies.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Benny Barrick; son-in-law, Harold Cassels; grandson, James Cassels; brother, L.T. “Pete” Shipley and sister, Opal Riley.

Survivors are her daughters: Elaine Jones and husband, Chuck, Marcia Cassels; sons: Charles W. “Buzz” Barrick and fiancé, Michelle, Craig Barrick and wife, Annette; grandchildren: Keith Jones and wife, Stephanie, Kristin Roettgers and husband, Chris, Alicia Gossett and husband, Dennis, Kari Westfall and husband, Jimmy, Dondee Barrick, Chris Barrick and wife, Chelsea, Teisha Neumann and husband, Chet and Chloe Berdoza and husband, Jorden; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
