Stephen John Gallagher was born on May 24, 1953, in Peterborough, New Hampshire, to John and Yvonne Gallagher. The youngest of three sons, Steve grew up in Keene, New Hampshire, where he later graduated from Keene High School in 1971. He went on to attend Plymouth State University, becoming an active member of Kappa Delta Pi, where he formed lifelong friendships and ultimately served as fraternity president during his senior year.
Steve cherished his summers as a camp counselor at Camp MI-TE-Na, where he created many of his fondest memories. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he began his career in education, teaching 6th and 7th grade science and math. He often spoke with humor and pride about those early years—large classes packed into a small school and the challenge of teaching two subjects at once.
After several years in the classroom, Steve transitioned into subcontracting at a nuclear power plant, a decision that changed the course of his professional life. In the 1980s, he earned his master’s degree from the University of Arkansas, forming new friendships and connections he treasured throughout his life. His work in the nuclear field took him across the country before he eventually settled in Carlsbad, New Mexico, in the 1990s.
It was in Carlsbad that Steve met his former wife, Sheila, and welcomed his beloved daughter. Becoming a father at 41 was one of the great joys of his life. Steve devoted himself to creating a childhood full of warmth, fun, and adventure—movies, afternoons at the pool, long walks with their dogs, and any activity that brought them closer together.
Steve worked at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) until his retirement in 2020, later returning as a subcontractor through 2025. He was deeply respected for his humor, kindness, and dedication to teaching others. Colleagues remember him not only for the skills he shared, but for the life lessons he offered along the way.
Stephen passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas, with his daughter nearby. He was preceded in death by his father, John J. Gallagher; his older brother, Robert “Bobby” Gallagher; and several beloved pets—Missy, Lucky, Daisy, Annie, and Cinch. Steve is survived by his daughter, Taylor Gallagher; his mother, Yvonne Gallagher; his brother, David Gallagher; his stepchildren, Trisha Tidwell and Chelsea Peterson; and many friends he considered brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be held on December 12, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Edward Catholic Church in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
