Sofia Cordova, 86, passed away August 28, 2025 at Goodlife in Carlsbad, NM.

Sofia Corrine Cordova, beloved mother, grandmother, friend, and pillar of her community, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025, in Carlsbad, New Mexico. She was 86 years old. Born on July 7, 1939, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Sofia was the cherished daughter of Alfredo Nieto Martinez and Alice Valdez Martinez. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Max Gilberto Cordova, with whom she shared more than 50 joyful years, and who she married on September 9, 1957, in Peñasco, New Mexico.

A proud and devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, Sofia’s faith and service were central to her life. As a Deacon at Carlsbad Presbyterian Church, she uplifted those around her through acts of kindness and spiritual guidance. Sofia was always the first to offer a helping hand, whether delivering Meals on Wheels, volunteering at the Senior Center, or supporting church activities, embodying a spirit of generosity and compassion.

Sofia’s life was brimming with hobbies and talents that she delighted in sharing with family and friends. She was an accomplished quilter, crocheter, knitter, and seamstress whose handmade creations brought comfort and beauty to those she loved. Her vibrant flower garden was a testament to her care and dedication, and her kitchen was often filled with the aroma of delicious meals lovingly prepared for family gatherings.

Bowling was another of Sofia’s great passions. A dynamic and fun-loving member of her local league, she treasured the camaraderie of her teammates and the thrill of the game. She was also an avid bingo player, enjoyed all sorts of games, relished good-natured competition, and displayed a playful sense of humor that brightened every room she entered.

Those who knew Sofia will remember her as outgoing, charismatic, and deeply selfless—she truly would “give you the shirt off her back.” Her positivity was infectious, her laughter memorable, and her willingness to help others boundless. Whether tending her garden or sharing home-cooked meals, Sofia’s love for people made every visitor feel like family. She leaves behind so many grateful for her wisdom, encouragement, and unwavering faith.

Sofia was preceded in death by her loving parents, Alfredo and Alice Martinez, devoted husband Max G. Cordova, son Nathan C. Cordova, and brothers Alfredo Jr Martinez, Ralph Martinez, Louis Martinez and sister Consuelo Padilla.
