Roger Wayne Whobrey

Roger “Wayne” Whobrey passed away September 22, 2026 at home from Alzheimer’s Disease. He and his wife celebrated 32 yrs of marriage on July 16, 2026. Wayne worked at Big Ben Coal Mine in Illionis. The coal mines closed and he along with his friends moved to Carlsbad in 1991 to work at the mines. He retired from the mines after many years. Within a year he began his job at Carlsbad Municipal Transit for 15 years, retiring in 2021. Wayne played bass guitar in a band in Illionis and with a local band called the Rounders. They played at private parties and at the North Mesa Senior Center. If you knew Wayne, you would hear him say his crazy and silly sayings.

Wayne was born in Mount Vernon, Illionis to Roger and Dorthy Whobrey. He was born at his grandparents’ house by a midwife. He served in the Navy on the ship USS Hornet as a young man from October 3, 1961 to August 5, 1965. He belonged to the Moose Lodge in Illionis and became a member of the Moose Lodge when he moved to Carlsbad. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife Sandra, son Christopher Whobrey (Jen) of Vincennes, Indiana, brother Allen (Paula) Whobrey of West Frankfort, III, sister Sharon Finney of West Frankfort, III. Stepsons: Bryan Juarez (Missy), Chris Juarez (Teresa), sister-in-law Jessica Deason (Nate) of Edgewood, N.M. Grandchildren: Collins Whobrey of Vincennes, Indiana, Rory Juarez (Autumn) of Carlsbad N.M. Alicia Juarez of Carlsbad, N.M., and numerous nieces and family members.

Wayne will be dearly missed by his wife, son, stepsons, grandchildren, and friends. He was taken far too soon from us. We all love you. May you rest in peace. We would like to say a big THANK YOU to the nurses, social worker, and staff at Enhabit Hospice Care.
