Robert W. Peters

Robert W. Peters, 75, of Camino del Oso, Carlsbad, New Mexico, passed away November 23, 2009 at his home. Visitation will be 1:00 PM - 7:00 PM, Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, November 25, 2009, 10:00 AM, at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Dan Boyd officiating. Private interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Robert W. (Bob) Peters was born July 11, 1934 in Huntington, IN to J. Clair and Grace M. (Rouzer) Peters. He graduated from high school in Huntington, IN in 1952. Bob then attended Huntington University graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958. He married Janet Anne Jacobsen on August 11, 1956 in Detroit, MI. He began his long time career with the National Park Service in 1959. He loved this career with the National Park Service. There was nothing else he would rather have done. Bob came to Carlsbad in 1974 with the Park Service and liked it so much that they returned after he retired. Every park had different resources and purposes. The opportunity to work at several different parks in numerous locations was always interesting and challenging and gave him a broad range of experience. Bob's priorities were family, church and career. Moving wasn't always easy but the family enjoyed living in different parts of the country. They experienced the diverse cultures and customs of each area. He said his wife Jan always did what was right for the family, sometimes under difficult circumstances. Bob was very proud of his children. They all worked hard and have been very successful. He said they have always been caring and considerate and uphold true Christian values. A very special time of Bob's life occurred after he retired. For almost three years Bob and a dozen other retired church members worked full time building a beautiful and functional new Sulphur United Methodist Church and parsonage in Oklahoma. Bob was the overall supervisor of the construction project and coordinated the work and the subcontractors that the men and other church members couldn't do. Completing the project and working with other members was the most rewarding thing he had ever done. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Luke Peters. He is survived by his wife, Janet A. Peters of Carlsbad, NM; two sons: Gary Peters and wife, Jennifer of Carlsbad, NM, Jody Peters of Havre, MT; two daughters: Susan Brooks of Carlsbad, NM, Peggy Schneberger and husband, Dr. Stephen of Carlsbad, NM; three grandchildren: Kyle and Wesley Burnett and Luke Peters; brother, Stanley Peters and wife, Lola Lee of Huntington, IN. Pallbearers will be Kyle Burnett, Wesley Burnett, Dick Forrest, Mike Chapin, Dr. Stephen Schneberger and Lynn Tusha. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Rose, Roger Logan, John Connel, Don Wallace and Larry Henderson. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 207 North Halagueno Street, Carlsbad, NM 88220. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com.
