Richard "Ricky" Vela Sr.

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Richard "Ricky" Vela Sr., a beloved Spouse, father, popo, brother, and friend, who left this world peacefully at home on September 1, 2026. Born on June 26, 1959, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Ricky was born to Santiago and Eduvigen "Vicki" Vela. His welita Leandra Vela raised him alongside his brother Gary Pierce. His early years were spent in the warmth of a loving family, and he carried that love throughout his life.

Ricky's journey began in Carlsbad, where he attended local schools. He graduated from Carlsbad High School class of 1977. In June 1980, he married Joann Sarabia, beginning a beautiful partnership that spanned decades. Together, they had their three kids Lil Rick, Jerome and Ryshel. Ricky's heart was overwhelmed with happiness because he finally had his Lil Girl.

Ricky was a man who knew the value of hard work. He started his career at a young age, selling newspapers, and later worked at Stevens Inn and Sunnyview Construction. His professional path led him to Forrest Tires Inc., where he proudly dedicated 25 years of service, often reminiscing about those years as his "best years" with the old crew. His career also included roles at Julio's Welding and Jade Construction as a heavy equipment operator until health reasons prompted him to retire.

A devout member of San Jose Catholic Church, Ricky's faith guided him through life's journey. He was a man of many passions, known for his infectious laughter and vibrant spirit. Ricky cherished the simple pleasures in life—savoring a cold beer while listening to the "oldies,” watching his favorite shows like Bonanza and Gunsmoke, and enjoying Monday night wrestling and football. A die-hard New York Giants fan, Sundays were dedicated to football games, often shared in the company of his beloved childhood friend and neighbor, James.

Christmas was a special time for Ricky. He delighted in gathering his family, especially his grandchildren, who were the light of his life. His famous asado, prepared outside on the disco, was a family favorite. Ricky's love for his family was boundless, and being a "Popo" to his grandchildren brought him immeasurable joy.

Ricky was preceded in death by his grandmother, Leandra Vela; brother, Santiago "Jimmy" Vela Jr, mother, Vicki Vela; and Aunt, Mary Smyser. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his surviving family: his father, Santiago Vela Sr.; brother, Gary Pierce, along with six other siblings; his devoted spouse, Joann Vela; sons, Richard "Lil Rick" Vela Jr; Jerome Vela and wife; daughter, Ryshel Navarrette, and her husband; grandchildren, Diego Vela, Khloe Vela, Zavin Navarrette, Zaliyah Navarrette, Zaylianna Navarrette, ZaRaylee Navarrette, and Zahrious Navarrette; and one great-granddaughter, Dhanie Vela.

A rosary will be held at 10:00 AM on September 15, 2026, at San Jose Catholic Church, 1002 DeBaca St., followed by a service at 10:30 AM. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Enhabit Home Care, Carlsbad Healthcare Clinic, Richard and Susan Forrest for years of friendship, Aunt Sheila Pineda & Family, and James and Pam Williams and family for their unwavering support and love

Ricky touched the lives of many with his kindness, humor, and generous spirit. He will be dearly missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
