Richard “Dick” Edward Rhodes, 82, of Vineyard Lane, Carlsbad, NM, passed away on April 26, 2024, at his home. Visitation will be 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM, Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home.  Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 PM, Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Ryan and Serina Nelson officiating.  Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, NM.   Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Dick was born January 4, 1942, in Harrisonburg, Virginia to Frank and Ethyl (Wenger) Rhodes.  He graduated in 1960 from Turner Ashby High School in Dayton, Virginia.  Dick married Laura Yoder on February 13, 1965, in Iowa City, Iowa.  They moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico in 1969.  Dick worked for Duvan Sulfur Mine near Orla, Industrial Electric, and NREN Anhydrous Plant in the early years.  In 1976, he went to work in the real estate and insurance business for 20 years.  Dick worked for Eddy County as an appraiser from 1996 until retiring in 2010.  He was an active member of the Carlsbad Mennonite Church and Gideons International for many years.

He was a strong Christian and loved to share God’s salvation story. In his years with the Gideons, he spoke in local churches and passed out Bibles at many locations and for various events. He served at Carlsbad Mennonite Church as a youth leader, an Elder, and helped maintain the building. After retirement, he enjoyed visiting with his friends at his coffee group. He enjoyed traveling, puzzles, reading, baseball, and playing games with friends. He was also an avid Cavemen basketball and baseball fan. He loved spending time with his family watching his children and grandchildren in sports and school activities.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Laura Rhodes, and brother, Eldon Jay Rhodes.

Survivors are his son, Glen Rhodes and wife, Rhonda of Arthur, IL; daughters: Sherri Smith and husband, Travis of Sanger, Texas, Colleen Keller and husband, Clay of Carlsbad, NM; grandchildren: Rebecca Hopkins and husband, Steven, Derek Rhodes and wife, Morgan, Trey Smith, Conner Smith, Cayla Keller, Cassie Keller, Carrie Lara and husband, Hector, Colleen Cane and husband, Nick; great-grandchildren: Serenity, Bennett, Wyatt, Lilly and Savannah; sisters: Mary Ethyl Gascho and husband, Jim, Doris Ann Roth, and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Derek Rhodes, Trey Smith, Conner Smith, Hector Lara, Serenity Lara, Gardner Fugate and Dave Engle.
