Raul Aguirre Onsurez passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025 in Lubbock, Texas surrounded by his loved ones. Raul was born on June 15, 1951 in Artesia, New Mexico to Tomasa Aguirre Onsurez and Susano Onsurez.
Raul was a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and proud veteran of the Vietnam War.
His early days were spent in the roping pens with friends and ranching with his cousins on his uncle Pedro Onsurez’s ranch in Loving. Raul served in the United States Marine Corps from 1972 to 1974. After an honorable discharge he returned to Eddy County, where he worked as a welder at Union Industrial and Industrial Electric. He worked for a period of time at the former Western Ag Potash mine before becoming a contract welder in the Permian Basin oil fields. Raul also worked as a truck driver for a catering business in the movie industry, a job that took him across the U.S. He later returned to welding and then retired from the business.
He married his beloved wife Margarita Lopez Onsurez on June 21, 1980. The couple had five children: Julie, Jessica, Raul Jr., Jana and Janell during their 45-year love affair.
Raul was a fisherman, a hobby he shared with the people he loved the most. He was an accomplished hunter, a sport he shared with his brothers, children and friends. His time was spent restoring a 1977 Ford Bronco, tending a garden, fruit and nut trees, and hanging out with his canine pals Sam Sam, Jeffrey, Junior and Luna.
Raul was preceded in death by his father Susano Onsurez.
He is survived by wife Margaret Lopez Onsurez, children Julie Onsurez Fuentes and husband Tony Fuentes; Jessica Onsurez; Raul Onsurez Jr. and wife Ashley Onsurez; Jana Onsurez Marquez and husband Andrew Marquez; and Janell Castillo and husband Matthew Castillo. He is also survived by his mother Tomasa Onsurez, siblings Chris Onsurez, Eddie Onsurez, Armando Onsurez, Carnation Onsurez Morman, Louisa Onsurez Spisak, Lila Onsurez Alaniz and Elena Onsurez Rodriguez; and grandchildren Calista, Caroline, Evolet, Carlene, Raul III, Allessandra, Emery, Aiden and Eliyannah, and great grandchild Delilah.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Our Lady of Grace building fund in Loving, New Mexico.
Pallbearers are Albert Lopez, Carlos Lopez, Philip Onsurez, Matt Castillo, Andrew Marquez and Tony Fuentes. Honorary pallbearers are Raul Aguirre Onsurez III, Aiden Shane Marquez and Mario Arenas.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM, Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Loving, NM followed by a vigil at 6:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:00 AM, Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church with Fr. Pasala Hruday Kumar officiating.
