Mildred was born on October 31, 1928, in Las Cruces, NM to Earl Franklin and Sarah Berry Franklin. She grew up in Edinburg, Texas, graduating from high school in 1946. It was there, at church, she met and married the true love of her life, Buster Smithers. They were married on May 21, 1946, and spent 74 years together before his passing in September 2020. They moved to Dell City, Texas in 1956 and took up farming. Mildred was involved in many community clubs and events. She owned a gift shop there called The Treasure Chest. She loved small town country life and always called Dell City home. In 1975 they moved to Carlsbad, NM.

Mildred will always be remembered as the strong rock of the family. She was everyone's favorite hello. She was a constant presence, dependable and incredibly humble. She was also a great listener and an avid reader. There was never a more kind and gentle soul leaving behind her legacy of selflessness, compassion, and dedication. She had an amazing faith in God that never wavered and she loved her family deeply.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Buster, three sisters and beloved dog Molly. She is survived by her daughter Yvonne Winters and husband David, grandson Chance Winters, grandson Chase Winters and wife Amber as well as a legacy of six great grandchildren, Morgan, Hannah, Gunner, Daisy, Laci and Colton Winters and many extended family members and friends.

The family wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to Lakeview Christian Home and Lakeview Hospice for all the love, special care, and attention they gave to our loved one and to us her family. You are such a blessing to us and we consider the Lakeview family a part of our family.
