It is with deep sorrow that the Mashaw family announces the death of their sweet, funny, loving and artistic brother, Michael Joseph Mashaw on Sunday May 17, 2026 at Las Palmas Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.
Mike was born October 1, 1951 at St. Francis Hospital in Carlsbad, New Mexico to James George and Helen Arleen (Peters) Mashaw. He was the fourth child in what was to eventually be a tight knit family of 14 children.
He attended St. Edward’s Catholic School through 8th grade and graduated from Carlsbad Senior High in 1969. Being an intelligent seeker of knowledge, Mike pursued subjects he was interested in at NMSU-Carlsbad.
Hardworking and a loyal employee, Mike began his work career at Collin Gerrells Men’s Wear, then worked at various potash mines until his retirement in 2016. As one of ten boys in the family, he was also busy with them on so many of his other talents from ceramic sculpture endeavors, beer making, boating, RVing, cooking, golfing, hunting, spear fishing, scuba diving, firework detonating and any other activity that involved family, fun and fire.
Mike’s antics could fill pages and will be shared by family members for years. Any who have been lucky enough to be part of those famous family picnics can attest to that.
His love extended to so many family and friends. He could be found helping out with cooking at the Carlsbad Elks Lodge #1558 and First Baptist Church. His arms extended around his loved step children. His nieces and nephews fondly remember how their “bachelor uncle” made them a welcome part of his circle.
Mike was predeceased by his parents, his brother Tom Mashaw and sister Cathey Hoskinson, his grandparents, George and Rosie Mashaw and Victor and Grace Peters, his stepchildren, Nathan McGee and Chessa McGee Aguilar and many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is survived by his sisters, Marie (Susie) Gravley (Brad), Christine (Teeny) Wolski and Francie Gordon (Jeff). Brothers, Ed Mashaw (Linda), Harold Mashaw (Laura), George Mashaw (Lela), Richard Mashaw, Pat Mashaw (Rhonda), Tony Mashaw (Dawn Ella), Bob Mashaw (Angela Webb) and Ray Mashaw (Amanda), sister-in-law, Mary Mashaw, brother-in-law, Bob Hoskinson, ex-wife and long-time friend, Janice Mashaw, stepson, Jason McGee (Heather) Additionally, he will be missed by his many nieces, nephews and cousins who were always considered as immediate family.
Mike’s wishes were to be cremated and Denton-Wood Funeral Home will provide those services. A Celebration of Life will be held the first part of July, date, time and place to be announced later.
The family wishes to thank so many who helped to make Mike’s final days’ peaceful ones. Gratitude is also extended to Del Sol Medical Center, Las Palmas Medical Center and Southern Sky Hospice who were so gracious in their care of Mike and the family.
