Mercy Delois Barker passed away peacefully on October 8, 2023, at her son’s home in Modesto, CA.  She was born on February 5, 1948, in Carlsbad, NM to Edith Nell Barker and Harold Faisone who preceded her in death.  Mercy was the oldest of nine siblings whom she cared for and loved throughout her life.

Mercy spent her early childhood in Carlsbad, NM and later move to Hobbs, NM with her family where she grew up.  She grew up in a Christian family and attended school at Booker T Washington.

Mercy was passionate about living life, and she dedicated her life to taking care of her family and friends. Mercy was not only a devoted mother but also a cherished grandmother and great-grandmother.  Her legacy lives on through her four loving children, ten adoring grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren who were truly the apple of her eye.

She was a loving mother to her daughter and three sons.   She had special relationships with each of them and bragged about their successes all the time. Her family affectionately called her “Pookie” and many friends knew her as “Mercy D.”   She was an independent woman who worked hard throughout her life and loved cooking and fashion.

Mercy eventually moved to Lubbock, TX where she settled and loved the vibrant spirit of the city and its welcoming community.  Lubbock was not just a place she called home; it was a part of her identity.  In her early career, she worked as head chef for Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, TX.  She went on to work in the Fashion Industry as well as working with children in the Lubbock Independent School district as a bus driver and teacher’s aide.  Her love for Lubbock will forever be a testament to her deep roots and a beautiful life she lived within a city she adored.

Mercy’s departure leaves a void that can not be filled, but her memory will forever warm our hearts.  She will be remembered for her love, her laughter, her incredible dishes, and her impeccable style.

She was proceeded in death by her grandparents, parents, brothers: Larry and Willie, and, sister Lucinda.

Mercy leaves to cherish her memory: Sisters: Saundra Mackey (Willie) and Lisa Sparks of TX, Brothers: Ray Barker of TX, Albert Hill (Regina) of CA, Phillip Hill of NM, Daughter: Michelle White of GA, Sons: Michael Mosely (Jacqueline) of CA, Charles McKee Jr. (Veshedia) and Roderick White (Marsha) of TX, 10 grandchildren (Jazmin, Ambrea, Jaylon, Jonathan, Michaela, Aryana, Ahmad, Anthony, Andrew, and Eric), 7 Great-grandchildren, 12 nieces, 8 nephews, and a host of cousins, great nieces and nephews, and relatives.

Visitation is scheduled from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, October 20, 2023, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral Services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home with Elder Willie Mackey, Sr. officiating.
