Melvin R. Pyeatt, 85, of Carlsbad, NM passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at home surrounded by his family. Melvin was born on December 17, 1937, in Glenwood Springs, CO to Niler and Bell Pyeatt.

 

Cremation has taken place, and there will be no visitation. A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 AM Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Happy Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Gary Davis officiating. His final resting place will be at the Carlsbad Cemetery in Carlsbad, NM. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Melvin grew up in Colorado, and while finishing school married the love of his life, Barbara Kempton on December 19, 1954, in Palisade, CO. He then graduated from Palisade High School in 1955. After starting their family of 6 children, they moved to Carlsbad in 1979. Melvin worked many years in the mining industry and surveying. He was a past member of the Colorado, Wyoming, Arkansas, and New Mexico State Surveyor Organizations. While in Carlsbad, he worked for Kerr-McGee and New Mexico Potash mines in underground production, and retired there as a mine manager. Melvin then started his own business, Pyeatt Surveying, which he ran for many years until retiring for the second time. He was a faithful follower of God and a member of the Happy Valley Baptist Church, as well as a member of the Gideons. In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking but most of all spending time with his family. He will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

 

Melvin was preceded in death by his father, Niler E. Pyeatt; mother, Ora Bell (Roby) Pyeatt; son, Bruce E. Pyeatt; three brothers; and four sisters.

 

Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Barbara A. (Kempton) Pyeatt; five children: Melvin R. Pyeatt and wife, Suzan of Carlsbad, NM; Roxann G. Brannon and husband, Charles of Carlsbad, NM; Kenneth D. Pyeatt and wife, Kathy of Pueblo, CO; Duane Niler Pyeatt and wife, SuNell of Plainview, TX; and Katherine L. Caddell of Carlsbad, NM; twelve grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; brother, Lawrence A. Pyeatt and wife, Mary of Grand Junction, CO; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
