Johnny L. Johnson

Johnny Layton Johnson Sr., 76, of Carlsbad, NM passed away at his home on Tuesday, August 29th, 2023. Johnny was born on February 8th, 1947, in Jackhorn, KY to Hassell and Hattie Johnson.

Johnny was a loving husband, father, grandfather and Christian. He enjoyed spending time with his family and teaching God’s word to all that would listen. He and his wife Sheila were baptized together in 1964, just one month before they married. Johnny never strayed from God’s word. He was a faithful Christian for 59 years and you were truly blessed if you were able to hear him preach. In his little free time, he enjoyed fishing, spending time in the mountains and riding motorcycles. If you asked him, he would say he lived a good life and he was ready, although we weren’t ready to let him go. To know him was to love him, and we are so blessed to have known him.

Johnny was preceded in death by his wife Sheila (Meade) Johnson, his parents Hassell and Hattie Johnson, his sister Sue Johnson, brother Mike Johnson and son Layton Johnson.

Johnny is survived by his daughter Caroline (John) Fleming of Carlsbad, NM, daughter in law Jill Johnson of Carlsbad, NM; granddaughter Lana Johnson of Carlsbad, NM, Grandson Johnny Johnson III of Lexington, KY; granddaughter Ally (Austin) Bolling of Isom, KY; great granddaughter Laya Johnson of Carlsbad, NM, great granddaughter Amelia Bolling of Isom, KY; multiple brothers and sisters in-law, and numerous extended family members.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, Friday, September 1, 2023 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A memorial service is scheduled for 4:00 PM, Friday, September 1, 2023 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Norman Miles officiating.  Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
