Herminia "Nena" G. Cortez

Herminia “Nena” G. Cortez, 81, of Old Cavern Hwy, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2026, at her home. 

Visitation will be 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM, Monday, February 16, 2026, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home followed by a vigil at 6:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:00 AM, Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at San Jose Catholic Church with Fr. Juan Carlos Ramirez officiating. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, NM. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Nena was born April 24, 1944, in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico to Salvador and Faustina (Carrasco) Gonzalez. She was a devoted wife to Cirilo Cortez over 50 years and a wonderful mother to their eight children. Nena will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Cirilo Cortez. 

Survivors are her sons: Saul Olivas and wife, Norma, Leonel Olivas and wife, Rosalynn, Cirilo Cortez and wife, Maria, Albian Cortez and wife, Alicia, and Rodolfo Cortez; daughters: Amabilia Velasquez and husband, Gregorio, Griselda Cortez, and Elizabeth Fuentes; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brothers: Jesus Manuel Gonzalez, Ramon Gonzalez, Santos Gonzalez, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be her five sons.
