During WWII, Gene dropped out of high school his junior year to join the U.S. Navy on August 23, 1944, and served aboard the USS Polana (AKA-35) until his discharge at the end of the war. Upon returning home to Oklahoma and unable to find work, he and one of his brothers were on their way to California when they found a job in Carlsbad, New Mexico working with a construction crew for El Paso Natural Gas Company on a pipeline project. Upon completion of the pipeline construction project, he got a job at one of the potash mines and worked as a potash miner until 1962 when he and fellow potash miner, Bill McCoullough, formed a used car business which they named “M&K Auto Sales”. After a few years Bill moved back to his home state of Louisiana but Gene kept the name “M&K Auto Sales” and successfully operated the business for 35 years, until his retirement in 1995. He was a Life Member of the Elk’s Lodge and the VFW. Gene married his high school sweetheart, Aline A. Miller, on August 2, 1946, in Carlsbad, New Mexico and they had two children, Dennis G. Kinsey and Sheryl A. Kinsey. They remained married for 63 years, until Aline’s passing on August 22, 2009.
