G. C. Thompson, 96, of Carlsbad, NM passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at Lakeview Christian Home. G. C. was born on October 31, 1927, in Newalla, OK to Gurnee and Gladys Thompson.

 

Visitation is scheduled from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:30 PM Thursday, May 16, 2024, at Sunset Church of Christ with Mike Veilleux officiating. Interment will follow at the Carlsbad Cemetery in Carlsbad, NM.

 

G. C. graduated from Harrah High School in 1945. He then went on to continue his education earning a B.S. in Business Education and History from Central State College in Edmond, OK in 1951, and then his Masters in Business Education from the University of Idaho in 1958. He also attended Oklahoma A&M College, Texas Tech University, and NMSU. During that time, he enlisted in the US Navy where he faithfully and honorably served his country. G. C. married the love of his life, Lola Mae Holland, on December 20, 1952, in Edmond, OK, and then started their family together. They moved to Carlsbad, NM in 1955, where they became charter members of Sunset Church of Christ, and where he served as a past deacon and member of the missions committee, as well as co-director of Skyridge Christian Youth Camp for 17 years. During their time in Carlsbad, he worked as a teacher for the Carlsbad Municipal School District for 33 years and was a member of the National Education Association. G. C. enjoyed traveling and photography, but most of all he loved the Lord and spending time with his family. He left a legacy of faith and love that lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.  

 

G. C. was preceded in death by his father, Gurnee Clinton Thompson; mother, Gladys Merle (Collier) Thompson; wife, Lola Mae (Holland) Thompson; three siblings: Deloris Thompson, Lois Banker, and Alvin Thompson; son-in-law, Robert Ortiz, Jr.; and a great grandson.

 

G. C. is survived by his three children: Darla Ortiz of Carlsbad, NM; Steven Thompson and wife, Susie of Hendersonville, TN; and Janet Brumfield and husband, Tim of Lubbock, TX; ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Pallbearers will be the following: Steven Thompson, Tim Brumfield, Orlando Ortiz, Esteban Ortiz, Jonathan McIlwee, Jesse Brumfield, Brian King, Josiah King. Honorary Pallbearers will be the following: Jeremy Bridges, Benjamin Bridges, Aiden Ortiz, Alexander Ortiz Munoz, Silas McIlwee, Kyle Thompson, Drew Thompson, John Coleman, Pryde Brown, Steve Peterson.
