Floyd Gene Bevers, 84, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 2, 2023 at his home in Carlsbad, NM. A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 8, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Blodgett Street Baptist Church with Rev. David Prell officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens Cemetery.
Floyd was born January 6, 1939 in Wichita Falls, Texas to James Henry Bevers and Leora Catherine (Reed) Bevers who preceded him in death. Floyd attended Carlsbad public schools and graduated Carlsbad High School Class of ’57. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Arts from New Mexico Highlands University and worked as a draftsman at Southwest Potash Mine in Carlsbad until he was drafted into the U. S. Army. He served at White Sands Missile Range as a draftsman from 1962-1964. Upon discharge from the military, he began his teaching career with the El Paso Public Schools where he taught high school industrial arts and career vocational programs for seven years. He completed his Masters Degree in Industrial Education at Texas A&M University in 1972 after which he was awarded a U.S. Office of Education fellowship for Professional Leadership Development for Vocational Personnel receiving his Ph.D. from Texas A&M in Vocational Education in 1975. He spent the remainder of his career serving the Del Valle (Texas) ISD as Career and Technical Education Director where he initiated several innovative programs for students until retiring in 2001.
Floyd married Burna Bridges in 1969 and they raised their three children in Austin, TX. He was dedicated to his family and faithful to the Lord serving as Sunday School teacher, Church Trustee and Deacon for many years. He was a kind, patient, humble, honorable, hard-working man of integrity who spoke few words, but his actions spoke volumes. He could put you at ease with his great sense of humor and make you laugh with his quick wit. He loved being a dad and “Pops” to his granddaughters and participating in all their activities. He had a great love for animals and they loved him back. Cats would follow him around like dogs. He had a love for everything cars and was a member of the local CARS Club and one of the original Dirt Dobbers.
He is survived by his wife, Burna, three children: Eric Bevers of Carlsbad; Kathy Scannell and husband Mike of Austin, TX; and James Bevers of Carrollton, TX; and grandchildren, Keira and Tarin Scannell of Austin.
Pallbearers will be Eric and James Bevers, Kathy and Mike Scannell, Eric Cook, and Gene Haggerton.
The family wishes to express special thanks to the professionals and staff of Lakeview Hospice who provided amazing care and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Gideons International, or Lakeview Hospice.
