Eugene “Gene” Conway Hood, 84, passed away in his home on Thursday, August 12, 2021.
Visitation will be held at Denton-Wood Funeral Home on Thursday, August 19th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 20, 2021, 10:00 AM at First United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Rusty Smith. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery.
Gene Hood was born October 19, 1936 to parents R.E. “Jack” and Bertha Hood in Carlsbad and was the oldest of five children. He was raised on the family farm and active in FFA during his high school years also serving in the National Guard after high school. Gene followed in his father’s footsteps to become a lifelong farmer at Black River.
Gene married Kathy in 1974, and together they built the Hood Farm and Ranch into a very successful venture working on all aspects of the day to day agriculture operation, raising cattle, growing cotton and alfalfa. Gene was well known for his wonderful garden each year, especially for his ability to grow the best Green Chili in Southeast NM and beyond.
They raised seven children (6 girls and 1 boy). Gene was an amazing father and stayed very busy participating in their school activities as well as providing them the experience and knowledge of raising and showing 4-H animals at the Eddy County Fair, just as he had done. He encouraged and supported education but also made sure they all knew how to change a tire and drive a tractor.
Gene spent his life displaying his true love and devotion to farming and was honored with being named “New Mexico Farmer of the Year” in 1991, and the “Outstanding Conservation Farmer” in the state by the New Mexico Association of Soil and Water Districts. He also received the “Carlsbad Foundation Pioneer Award” in 2012, and named “City of Carlsbad, NM Outstanding Citizen”, Saturday, October 22, 2016.
Although he had a true love for farming, his greatest love and passion was being with his wife Kathy, he enjoyed every minute he possibly could participating in family events. He was the constant we could all count on! He was a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys but enjoyed all sports. He spent many years attending sporting events, dance recitals, birthday parties for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. This kept him very busy and he was their greatest fan!
Gene will always be remembered as an extraordinary, fun, loving, kind, supportive, generous father, grandfather and friend.
He has set a great example of hard work and honesty which has been very impactful with his children and grandchildren having honest and very strong work ethics.
He will be greatly missed by his family, his friends, and the many people whose lives he touched in his unique and special way.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Bertha Hood. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; his seven children: Beverly Semioli, Mooresville NC, Benny and wife, Tinna Hood, Gunter, TX, Becky Hood, Amarillo, TX, Debbie and husband, Salty Hughes, Donna and husband, Todd Sellmer, Dorothy and husband, Cecil Thomas, all of Carlsbad NM, Della and husband, Bob Murray, Lubbock, TX; sister, Marylou and husband, John Ballard, Bonnie and husband, Raymond Clements, both of Carlsbad, NM; brothers: Wayne and wife, Betsy Hood, Hobbs, NM, Gordon and wife, Dorothy Hood, Beaumont TX; 21 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren.
