Dr. Lon David Babbitt passed away on August 9, 2021 at Carlsbad Medical Center. He was attended by loved ones when he passed.

Lon was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on October 20, 1936 to James and Loretta (Sensenbrenner) Babbitt. He attended Medical School at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, interned at Oregon Health & Science University, was stationed at Kindley Air Force Base Bermuda and completed his Radiology Residency at Denver General Hospital. He practiced radiology in Green Bay, WI, Carlsbad, NM, Artesia, NM, and Ruidoso, NM. He later did locum tenens work until his retirement in 2017.
He is preceded in death by his father, James Sylvester Babbitt, mother, Loretta (Sensenbrenner); four siblings: Edward, Gerald, Donald, and Gloria, and wife, Frances Helen (St. Amour). He is survived by his six children: Jenifer Louise, Theresa Jean, Mary Frances, Kathleen Ann, Stephen Fred, and Rachel Marie; wife, Debby (O’Leary); grandchildren: Katie-Jo, David, Adrienne, Jocelyn, Sarah, Josie, Cambria, James, John, Andrew, Peter, and Natalie; great-grandchildren: Andrew, John, and Jenifer; step-children: Michele Cannady, Diana Abeny, James Hernandez, Valerie Garcia; step-grandchildren: Kristen Cannady, Autumn Cannady (deceased 9/20), Katelyn Cannady, Jason Cannady, Amber Cannady, Cymber Abney, Silas Abney, Kenoa Abney, Calais Abney, Ilyana Garcia, Issac Martinez, Ivan Gallindo, and great-grand stepchild, Douglas Morgan.
Lon enjoyed playing golf all his life and was a committed Catholic. His spare time in pre-retirement and retirement was spent in the service of others - delivering Meals on Wheels, participating at Jonah’s House Food Pantry, supporting New Beginnings Caring Pregnancy Center of Carlsbad, and singing in the choir at St. Edward Catholic Church. He was happiest while drinking his ever-present cup of coffee and talking with friends and family. Lon will be missed by those who were fortunate to have had him in their lives.
Visitation will be held at Denton-Wood Funeral Home, 5pm-7pm, on Thursday, August 12, 2021. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10am, Friday, August 13, 2021 at St. Edward Catholic Church with Fr. Hruday Kumar Pasala officiating. Interment is scheduled for 10am, Monday, August 16, 2021 at Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, NM. Condolences may be expressed at dentonwood.com
