Derek G. Gonzalez, 32, former resident of Carlsbad, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2025, in Columbia, Missouri.
Visitation will be held from 5 - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
Derek was born June 3, 1992, in El Paso, Texas, to Jorge and Anna (Gomez) Gonzalez. A 2011 graduate of Carlsbad High School, Derek answered the call to serve his country and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2013. He served with distinction until 2018, rising to the rank of sergeant before his honorable discharge. Driven by courage and commitment, he continued his service by doing contract work in Afghanistan, followed by working as a wildland firefighter in Nevada. Most recently, Derek was a dedicated truck driver based in Columbia, Missouri.
Derek was known for his unwavering work ethic and remarkable mental fortitude. He was the rock of his family—their defender and protector—always placing the well-being of others above his own. His strength and loyalty were unmatched, and his presence brought a sense of security to those who loved him. He found peace in the outdoors, especially while fishing, but nothing meant more to him than spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Efren Gomez; and his paternal grandparents, Antonio and Lupe Gonzalez.
Left to honor and cherish his memory are his parents, Jorge and Anna Gonzalez; brothers, Nigel Gonzalez and wife, Cortni, and Lionel Gonzalez; sister, Emilee Preciado and husband, Alfredo; and those he considered brothers: Michael Gomez, Shokie Travelino, and Rico Soto. He also leaves behind beloved nephews and niece: Diego Gonzalez, Isabella Gonzalez, and Jeremiah Preciado; his maternal grandmother, Gloria Gomez; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and fellow U.S. Marine Corps brothers.
Pallbearers will be Nigel Gonzalez, Lionel Gonzalez, Alfredo Preciado, Rico Soto, Julius Fuentes, and Stefan Mireles (honorary: Michael Gomez and marine brothers)
