Chester Kent Berry, age 84 passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024.  Graveside services are scheduled for 10:00 AM, Friday, April 26, 2024 at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park with Pastor Howell Scott officiating.  Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers will be Jeremiah Fernandez, Trey Berry, Kent Zamora, Alan Fernandez, Rick Zamora, and Casey Garner.   Honorary pallbearers are Terry Roper, Gary Roper, Steve Jones and Mark Wilkie.

Chester was born on December 3, 1939 in Colorado City, Texas to N.T. and Jeanette (Simpson) Berry.

N.T. moved the family to Carlsbad in 1946 to work for the CAA, later known as FAA.

Chester graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1958.  He attended NMSU and later married Merle Anne Adams on January 22, 1959.  Chester and Merle were married for 65 years and had three children, Chester Kent Berry, II “Chuck”, Misti Anne Berry and Alisa Michele Berry.

Chester worked at Snodgrass Tire Company, IMCC Potash until the strike in 1962.   He then worked for Basin Chemical and later partnered with Dick Woodul to form Woodul Services selling flooring.   Chester continued his entrepreneurship and formed a business with John Goodwin selling muzzle loader rifles and accessories.  

Chester loved the outdoors.  He loved hunting, fishing and going to Mountain Man Rendezvous events.  Later in life, he became a professional hunter/guide for Steve Jones until he retired in 2014.  

Chester was preceded in death by his parents, N.T. & Jeanette Berry, grandparents Chester Cleveland and Cora Mae Berry and Nathaniel & Myrtle Simpson.   

He is survived by his wife, Merle; children, Chester Kent “Chuck” Berry II and wife Terri, Misti Anne Fernandez and husband Alan of Carlsbad, Alisa Michele Zamora and husband Rick of Lubbock, TX; sister Barbara Jean Berry of NM; eight grandchildren, Tenisha Graham and husband Jamie of TX, Tanille Bruce and husband Winn of CO, Jeremiah Fernandez and wife Lacey of Carlsbad, Adrianne Prouty and husband Bryan of TX, Trey Berry and wife Becca TX,  Sadie Smith and husband Dennis of TX,  Kent Zamora and wife Allie of TX, and Sunni Raitz and husband Jonathan of TX and 19 great-grandchildren.

We are so thankful for the care and support we received at Lakeview Puckett House, Lakeview Hospice and Good Life during his illness.  

Chester will always be remembered as “The Great White Hunter”.
