Charles A. “Butch” Smith, 78, of S. Spencer Street, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2026 at his home.
Visitation will be 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Sunday, June 7, 2026 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM, Monday, June 8, 2026 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, NM. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Butch was born on December 24, 1947, in Snyder, Texas, to A.P. and Virginia (Brunkhurst) Smith. He graduated from Hermleigh High School in Hermleigh, Texas, and later attended Cisco Junior College.
Following his education, Butch worked alongside his father in the family business, 3 Way Electric. In 1973, he began a career as an electrician in the potash mines and later worked for Land O’Lakes, where he eventually retired.
On May 18, 1984, Butch married Imogene Speights. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially bow hunting and fishing, and had a lifelong love of playing the guitar. He also found great satisfaction in gardening and woodworking.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents, A.P. and Virginia Smith; his brother, John Lynn Smith; and his sisters, Gloria Jean Watson and Joann Smith.
Survivors are his wife, Imogene Smith; daughter, Carol Santillan of Kansas City, MO; sons: Roger Smith and wife, Kiersten of Tucson, AZ, Robert Speights and wife, Beth of Lubbock, Texas, Steven Speights of Colorado Springs, CO, Billy G. Speights, Jr. and wife, Marina of El Paso, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brothers: Terry Smith and wife, Billie of Lubbock, Texas, Curtis Smith of Lubbock, Texas, Tommy Smith of Snyder, Texas; adopted brother, Brent Shafer and wife, Mary Jo of Ira, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Dustin Speights, Nicholas Speights, Robert Speights, II, Erik Kurtz, Alonzo “Eddie” Campos, Billy Speights, III, and Alex Speights.
