Cecilia T. Castaneda

Obituary Cecilia T. Castaneda, 76, of San Miguel Street, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Friday, April 24, 2020 at Carlsbad Medical Center. Private services will be held. Cecilia was born December 14, 1943 in Carlsbad, NM, to Jose and Isabell (Carrasco) Trevino. She met the love of her life, Henry Castaneda and they eloped on November 12, 1960, but soon married in December. Cecilia retired from the State of NM in Children, Youth and Family Services. Her faith in the Lord was unwaving. She was devoted to the democratic party and volunteered many hours helping with city, county and state officials. Cecilia was one of the first members and facilitators of the DPNM Hispanic Caucus in Eddy County. She was a long-standing member of the American G.I. Forum and of LULAC. Cecilia was honored by the G.I. Forum in the 1970s as one of the key witnesses against Curry, Chaves, Eddy, and Otero Counties in a reapportionment suit, which resulted in the redrawing of 16 House districts in the state. Her leadership, guidance, and wisdom will be sorely missed. Cecilia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry Castaneda, Sr.; brother, Elizandro Trevino and sister, Elizema Trevino. Survivors are her daughters: Cathy Safford and Troy Hughes and Debby Castaneda and A.W. Coutal; sons: Henry Castaneda, Jr. and wife, Kathy; Freddie Castaneda and fianc, Camille, Greg Castaneda and wife, Vanessa and Christopher Castaneda and wife, Alice; grandchildren: Melinda Martinez, Rory Castaneda and wife, Jacqueline, Katie Jo Castaneda and Jimmie Stewart, Ashley Ramirez and husband, John, Henry Jacob Castaneda and wife, Lauryn, Fredrick, Santino, Gionnie, Armani Castaneda, Taylor Castaneda, Ty Castaneda, Trey Castaneda, Breonna Castaneda, Elijah Castaneda, Damon Castaneda, Christopher Castaneda, Nathaniel Castaneda; great-grandchildren: Zeke, Alena, Damara, Solara, Roenin, Brody, Trace, Isabelle and Eden; sisters: Elvira Rodriguez and husband, Ernesto, Jane Guevara, Dorothy Jones and husband, Ken, Terry Santos; brothers: Joe Trevino and wife, Diana, Rogelio Trevino and numerous nieces and nephews.
