Brenda Kay Mares

Brenda Kay Mares, age 64, passed away on April 3, 2026, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on January 19, 1962, in Portales, New Mexico, to Jimmy Lee Donnel and Wanda Donnel. Brenda grew up on a farm, where she developed a deep love for animals and for barrel racing with her beloved horse, “Society Page,” a gift from her daddy. She was the youngest of six.

Brenda was a devoted wife to her husband, Daniel Mares who loved her dearly and remained by her side through every moment. Together they raised three children, Paul Mares, Kelly Mares Herrera, and the late Zack Mares, and built a family rooted in love, faith, and strength. She was also blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy.

Brenda loved the Lord deeply and lived her faith daily, always extending kindness and care to others. She was the kind of woman who made everyone feel like family-a true mother figure to anyone who knew her. Her compassion for people and animals alike was boundless.

 Visitation is scheduled for 9:00 AM, Thursday, April 9, 2026 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in the Relief Society Room. A funeral service to honor her life will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, April 9, 2026, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 2424 Mesa Street, Carlsbad, NM 88220.

Her faith and love will continue to inspire all who knew her.

“I know that my Redeemer lives,

and at the last He will stand upon the earth.

And after my skin has been thus destroyed,

yet in my flesh I shall see God.”

She will be deeply missed by those who truly knew her.
