Beryl E. Wayland

December 31, 1934 — February 1, 2025

Carlsbad

Beryl Wayland, 90, born to Frank and Anna Mae (Tipton) Wayland December 31, 1934, in Elk City, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully, leaving a legacy of love and kindness. He married Wanda Porter on November 17, 1956, and together they created a warm and loving family environment.

A devoted father, Beryl taught his daughters to ride motorcycles and drive his Willy's Jeep in reverse up C-hill. Despite being unable to swim, he purchased a boat to teach his daughters to water ski on the Pecos River. Camping trips were a cherished family tradition, where Beryl would entertain everyone with his guitar, jokes, and joyful spirit around the campfire. He had a passion for hunting arrowheads, which reflected his adventurous nature.

An accomplished musician, Beryl once shared the stage with Roy Orbison. His home was always filled with music, as friends and family gathered to hear him play his guitar and mandolin. Known for his kindness, he welcomed everyone with open arms and never hesitated to help those in need. Beryl dedicated 42 years of service to the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring in 1996. After retirement, he spent time working crossword puzzles and mastering video poker, the latter earning him the nickname King of Royal Flushes.

Beryl is preceded in death by his father, mother, and the love of his life, Wanda, his wife of almost 50 years. He is survived by his brother Terry Wayland, daughters Lisa Petska, Lynn Black, and Lexi Kessler, grandchildren Toni Jo Petska-Reed, Farrah Black, Cody Kessler, and Chad Wayland Kessler, as well as great-grandchildren Kyrsten Petska, Haze Wood, Will Goff, and Austin Kessler, great-great-grandchildren Cayson Griffith and Kymber Griffith, and many nephews and nieces.

Beryl will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His infectious smile and positive impact on everyone he met will forever be remembered. We are truly blessed to have had him as our father. The only solace the family has is knowing our father and mother will be reunited again in heaven, picking up where they left off here on earth—starting anew and being a couple again. Love you, Dad, until we meet again. There are no services planned at this time. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a later date.
