Although his name appeared as Bentura on some official documents, everyone knew him simply as Ventura, and to his family he was always Güero.
Ventura "Güero" Salcido, 72, of Loving, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 4, 2026, in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Every family has someone who keeps them together, no matter how far apart they may be, whether by getting in their car and being there in person or through a simple phone call. For us, that person was Güero.
He was a storyteller, a historian, who delivered our family’s common knowledge through wit and humor. He had a remarkable memory for people, places, and events, and he understood that stories are one of the ways a family remains together across generations. Whether recounting childhood adventures, recalling relatives long gone, or sharing memories of familial life between Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico, Güero made sure to continue living. Through his storytelling and visits, he served as a bridge between generations, reminding young and old family members of where they came from and who came before them. In sharing those stories, he preserved more than memories; he preserved a sense of belonging.
Ventura lived a life defined by generosity, independence, and deep devotion to family. He was happiest when visiting his siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, never needing a special occasion to stop by and spend time together. His presence was steady and dependable. If someone needed help, he would be sure to show up for them in the best way he could.
Güero was honest. He believed in telling things as they were, without pretense or unnecessary sugarcoating. He was quick-witted and could lift the mood with a perfectly timed observation, quip, or comeback. Those who knew him understood that his bluntness was never unkind. His observations came from sincerity and a genuine care for our well-being.
Ventura is survived by his brother, Jorge Salcido; his sister, Delia Salcido; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends whose lives were enriched by his generosity, humor, and steadfast love.
He was preceded in death by his siblings Guadalupe Salcido, Manuel Salcido, Socorro Peralta, Graciano Salcido, and Filomeno Salcido.
Visitation will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, followed by a Vigil at 6:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Loving, New Mexico. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, with Fr. Pasala Hruday Kumar officiating. Interment will follow at Loving Cemetery.
As our stories continue to be told around kitchen tables, family gatherings, and quiet conversations, Güero's voice will remain among them. His generosity, laughter, honesty, and the memories he entrusted to those who listened ensure that he will continue to guide future generations, not only through what he did, but through the stories that keep a family alive.
