Alton Darral Mahaffey

Obituary Alton Darral Mahaffey, of Carlsbad, NM passed away September 30, 2020 at the age of 79. Visitation will be 5 PM 7 PM, Monday, October 5, 2020 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. A graveside service is scheduled for 2:30 PM, Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at Carlsbad Cemetery. He was born in Portales, NM and grew up in Oregon where he enlisted in the Army just out of high school. After being honorably discharged, Alton moved to Carlsbad where he met and married Linda Messer. Together they had one daughter and four sons. While he spent most of his career as a driller, Alton also spent time as a Consulting Engineer in Saudi Arabia. He later became a Supervisor on the production end. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, woodworking and building furniture. Mostly, he loved being with family and friends. Just before his passing, he became a great-great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Rhea and Thomas J. Mahaffey, and brothers Ed Mahaffey, Mac Mahaffey and Bill Mahaffey. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Linda F. Mahaffey; daughter, Mary Katherine Mahaffey and husband Scott, of Green River, Wyoming; sons: Thomas Burl Mahaffey of St. Helens, Oregon, Gary Darral Mahaffey of Carlsbad, NM, William Ray Mahaffey of Rock Springs, Wyoming and David Allen Mahaffey of Carlsbad, NM; one sister, Dorothy Johnson of Texas; 11 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 1 great- great granddaughter.
