Alice Anna Turnbow was born on April 29, 1940, in Ada, Oklahoma, to James Leslie Wilkinson and Minnie Floy Yoakum Wilkinson. She passed away peacefully after a short illness, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, in Katy, Texas, just nine days after turning 84 years old.
Alice was a faithful member of the Fry Road Church of Christ. She was a dedicated Christian woman who made serving the Lord her top priority. Alice was known for her kind and loving spirit. Even in her pain during her hospitalization, she never said an unkind word to any of her family or medical staff.
Alice grew up in New Mexico and met the love of life Carl Eugene Turnbow in Carlsbad, New Mexico. After graduating from Carlsbad High School, Alice and Carl married on May 25, 1958 at Hillcrest Church of Christ. Their first great adventure was driving from Carlsbad, New Mexico to Tampa, Florida where Carl was stationed in the U.S. Air Force.
The newlyweds soon moved back to New Mexico where Carl was stationed at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, New Mexico. After Carl left the Air Force, the couple lived in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Snyder, Texas, Kearny, Arizona, and La Porte, Texas. They settled in Katy, Texas after their retirement.
Alice and Carl had three children. While the children were young, Alice was a full-time homemaker. She made sure that Carl went to work with the most delicious lunches, including little pies that made his co-workers a little wistful. Alice’s children were always dressed in beautiful hand sewn clothing.
After her children were older, Alice applied her accounting and organization skills in a career as the Assistant Comptroller at San Jacinto College in Deer Park. She worked there for many years and cherished the friends that she made while employed there.
Alice is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Carl Turnbow, daughter Kathy and son-in-law Larry Jones of Katy, Ron and daughter-in-law Ange Turnbow of McKinney, Texas. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Lela and Kellen Kemp of Katy, Rachelle and Reese Herring of Fort Worth, Monica and Adam Sims of Lubbock, Melina and Brady Cook of Greenville, TX, Mitchell and Ariana Turnbow of Fort Collins, CO, Will Grotewold of Pensacola, FL, and Alyssa Perego of Katy. Alice was the doting great grandmother of 13 great grandchildren: Jacey, Rylan, Keegan, Gavin, Logan, Jolie, Owen, Hannah, Levi, Avery, Oliver, Hattie, and Addison. Alice is also survived by her brother, James and sister-in-law Stephanie Wilkinson of Tomball.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Janet Meyer, grandson Steven Ryan Starr, and grandson Alex Hayden Starr.
The family would like to thank the many members of the staff of Memorial Hermann Katy hospital who provided her medical care and comfort in her final days.
A graveside service is scheduled for 3:00 PM, Friday, May 17, 2024 at Carlsbad Cemetery, Carlsbad, NM.
