Adeline "Addie" Chidder

Adeline “Addie” Chidder, 99, of Carlsbad, New Mexico passed peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family May 24, 2021.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services are scheduled for July 14, 2021 at St. Norbert Catholic Church, Orange, California. She will be laid to rest at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Orange, California immediately following services.

Addie was born on January 29, 1922, in Columbus, Ohio to Polish immigrant parents, Stanley and Helen Loscko. From a young age, she played piano and served as a church organist for her family parish in East Columbus. After graduating with honors form St. Mary’s of the Springs High School, she studied bookkeeping while managing the accounts of her father’s neighborhood market and restaurant. She later married the love of her life, John Stephen Chidder on September 15, 1945, and they soon became devoted parents for their family of seven daughters.

For Addie, the love of family and church provided her life’s foundation. Ministries to the Catholic Church in Southern California and Carlsbad, New Mexico included teaching CCD classes, offering Sunday liturgical readings, and as a member of the Franciscan Order provided hospice care for homebound needs. An avid reader, Addie inspired a love for reading in her daughters. She was a skilled cook, often preparing the family’s traditional Polish-Hungarian meals. She is often remembered sitting at her sewing machine making beloved annual Easter dresses and once sewed an exquisite bridal gown. In retirement, she crocheted beautiful blankets for cherished grandchildren and enjoyed morning walks with her husband along the Pecos River near their home.

She was dearly loved and will be tenderly missed.

Addie was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Stanley Loscko; husband, John Chidder; three daughters: Suzanne Ubel, Nancy Wisham, and Mary Jackson; and also five brothers.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Best and husband, Kenneth of Eloy, AZ; daughter, Annette Stuurmans and husband, Robert of Carlsbad, NM; daughter, Elizabeth Chidder of Brooklyn, NY; daughter, Martha Richardson and husband, Ray of Carlsbad, NM; twelve grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Bruns of Cincinnati, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews.
